HELENSBURGH and Craighelen provided the winning pairs in the annual District Vets tennis tournament, held at Helensburgh Tennis Club on Saturday.
Featuring players from Helensburgh, Craighelen, Cardross and Kirktonhill, both the men’s and women’s events were played to a round-robin format, with two group winners playing each other in the final.
The men’s group winners were Alan Barbour and Andy Bone (Kirktonhill) and Phil Hamilton and Bobby Kerr (Helensburgh), and though the Kirktonhill duo got off to a great start in the final, breaking Bobby’s serve in the opening game and opening up a 3-1 lead, Phil and Bobby broke back to leven at 3-3.
The seventh game went to 10 deuces before Bobby and Phil claimed the game, and the driving seat, and went on to win the match.
In the ladies event, Craighelen’s Sue Black and Susan Bell used all their experience to dominate the final against Alison Fotheringham and Judith Reilly and came away comfortable winners.
The entry fees gathered will be split into four and donated to a charity of each of the winners’ choice.
