YOUNG athletes from Helensburgh Amateur Athletics Club took on the best in Scotland recently at Scottish Athletics’ National Cross Country Relays in Cumbernauld.
The event attracted athletes from all over the country and also saw Rio 2016 stars Andrew Butchart and Callum Hawkins take to the hills in the senior event.
The teams competed over an energy sapping cross country course. It is a hugely well attended race in the Scottish Cross Country calendar which, across all age groups, had almost 2400 entries.
The junior races saw almost one hundred teams competing in each of the girls and boys races.
First up for Helensburgh AAC were Amelia Murphy and Jenny Scott, who both put in strong performances over the 2500m course.
Following the girls were the boys team with Matthew Cameron running well on the first leg, handing over to Finn Burden for leg two and Josh Bain then taking on the final leg.
Despite good performances from Burgh, the strength of the field in the national competition meant that no silverware was won.
