THREE Burgh ladies went away for a fling and returned with top honours.

Helensburgh Athletic Club"s women"s section claimed the womens club team title at the Montane Highland 'Fling' Ultra race.

This was the third team triumph in a fortnight, remarkably involving nine different athletes.

On this occasion, it was the turn of Aileen Scott, Ellen McVey and Lorna Masterton.

The 'Fling' is an Ultra Marathon covering the 53 miles of the Southern portion of the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Tyndrum.

All three are seasoned ultra runners, having regularly competed in the West Highland Way race itself, covering the whole 96 miles.

Aileen was first of the trio home as ninth woman and 93rd finisher overall from the 250 individual starters.

Her time was 10 hours, 45 minutes and 25 seconds.

Ellen McVey dipped under the 12 hour mark by less than a minute, finishing 20th woman and 166th overall, while Lorna"s 12.10.30 placed her 23rd woman and 181st overall.

The race also includes relay teams with the course divided into four sections broadly similar in length, but vastly different in terrain. The club fielded a mixed team with Erwin Losekoot, fresh from his trail-running exploits in Hong Kong, on the opening stage.

Erwin covered the twelve miles from Milngavie to Drymen in one hour and 35 minutes.

Jan Fellowes took the second stage, almost 14 miles over Conic Hill into Balmaha and on to Rowardennan, clocking 2.42.

The third section was also almost fourteen miles, past Inversnaid and on to Inverarnan, covered by Andrew Stafford in 2.58.

Gail Thomas took the final section, 13 miles to the finish at Tyndrum, clocking 2.43.
