RECORD BREAKER: Angus hopes his recent good form will stand him in good stead for the Commonwealth Games

HELENSBURGH thrower Angus McInroy has his sights set on Commonwealth glory after smashing two discus records in the space of a week.

The athlete, who represents Shettleston Harriers, set new standards in the discus event by beating the Scottish native record at the Scottish athletics championships in Pitreavie.

He set a new milestone of 56.76 metres and that was just a week after beating the 19-year-old national record in Italy.

The native record is a record broken on Scottish soil by an athlete and the national record is set by any Scot competing in any country.

The Glasgow University student now can't wait to compete against the best international competitors in Delhi in October.

He told Sport Scene: "I beat the native record which is something to be proud of.

"It was a qualifying event for the Commonwealth Games and so I am well on my way.

"I have got a bit of training to do before the Commonwealth Games in October and I'm looking forward to it."

McInroy has gone from strength to strength since he began competing in the discus at the age of 16.

He has competed for Clydesdale Harriers, Shettleston and is also a member of Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers in London.

McInroy has aspirations to reach the Olympics in 2012 and believes that athletics have benefited from Britain hosting the games.

He added: "I have been throwing for about seven years now.

"I have just been involved in the discus.

"I used to throw the shot putt in school but I am a bit big for that.

"I would like to get to the Olympics, that's where I would like to end up.

"I think there are more opportunities and the standards are definitely higher and everyone in the discus is throwing better.

"I have added three metres to my personal best recently, which is quite a significant distance."
