Dumbarton Academy FP's 0 Rhu AFC 2

RHU progressed to the quarter-final of the Challenge Cup after an impressive win over premier league outfit Dumbarton Academy on Saturday.

Rhu’s starting XI included none other than nine ex-Academy players and on the day the away team were far too strong for the League Cup holders and put their name in the hat for the fourth round.

Rhu dominated proceedings from the outset. After Stuart McGillivary had headed off the crossbar in the opening stages, they took the lead through an O’Donohue header on 15 minutes.

A free-kick from the left hand side of the box was nicely delivered, deep to the back post from Stillwell. It was O’Donohue who read the flight of the ball best, looping a header far beyond the reach of goalkeeper McGillivray and into the Accies net.

Whilst the home side struggled to gain a foothold they did spurn a fabulous opportunity to draw level as Buchanan’s effort from six yards out struck both the bar and the inside of the post before bouncing clear.

Rhu weren’t flustered by this rare attack and doubled their lead on the half hour. O’Donohue was again on hand to pounce after a set piece wide from the left ricocheted into the centre back’s path and, with an open goal at his mercy, made no mistake.

Half-time 0-2 MacPhee’s well-struck free-kick grazed the outside of the post from 25 yards for the Academy. It was, in truth, only the home side’s second and last chance of the match.

McCallum forced a good stop in the closing stages from McGillivray, but Rhu comfortably saw out their 2-0 win as a frustrated Accies touchline were left to lick their wounds.

Rhu now face a quarter-final tie away to Premier League Dalziel on Saturday.
