DUMBARTON striker Garry Fleming insists he didn’t think twice about signing on again at the Rock.

The fans’ favourite will play his fifth season at Dumbarton next season, he is now Sons’ second longest serving player behind goalkeeper Jamie Ewings.

Last summer the 29-year-old weighed up an offer to go full-time at St Mirren before deciding to remain with the part-timers.

This year Dumbarton’s was the only offer on the table but that suited Fleming just fine. He said: “To be truthful I didn’t have any other offers but I’m obviously happy at Dumbarton. If there was a full-time offer it would need to be something silly for me to leave Dumbarton and my job.

“I was pleased to get everything sorted out early on and hopefully we can carry on from last year and have another good season.”

Fleming had his best ever goal-scoring season last year, netting 11 times and cleaned up at the club’s end of season awards.

He was also named vice-captain and skippered the team for the first time in absence of Darren Barr.

The striker believes more games up front helped him to an impressive goal tally. But he revealed manager Stevie Aitken would prefer him to play deeper next season, as he did for much of the second half of the last campaign when he operated just behind Christian Nade who arrived in January.

He said: “Hopefully I can improve on my goal tally next season. Under Ian Murray I was played wide quite a lot and played in centre midfield. Stevie (Aitken) has played me more up front.

“We spoke when I signed my contract and he said he quite liked me playing from deeper. When we brought Christian Nade in last season I played just behind him a fair bit and I think he likes me playing in there.

“He said he likes that I’m powerful, I can put in tackles and also play good through balls. He said he’d be quite interested in playing me there throughout the season."
