HELENSBURGH FC finished their season by shocking favourites Duntocher Hibs in the Challenge Shield Final to claim the trophy.

Ten-man Burgh battled to a 2-1 win in Johnstone to deny Duntocher Hibs a quadruple season after they already won the league and two cups.

Helensburgh opened the scoring 20 minutes in. Kyle Sharkey pinched the ball from the Duntocher player and rolled a superb pass into the path of Davie Sinclair, he controlled the ball on the run and who slid it past the keeper.

Burgh's defence held firm as Duntocher pressed to level, but it was Burgh who grabbed the next goal. A corner wasn’t dealt with properly by the Duntocher defence and Alan Birnie took advantage to turn the ball home from close range.

Burgh seemed to be coasting, but in the dying moments of the half their goalkeeper Cavanna was sent off.

He instinctively raised his hand to block a shot when outside his area and gave the referee no choice.

With no back-up keeper on the bench all eyes turned to Scott Petro who despite being the club's record goalscorer now had the chance to show he had more than one string to his bow.

Helensburgh did a good job of protecting Petro in second half, and could have increased their lead. Birnie made a driving run down the left and his shot was scrambled clear on the line just as Kyle Sharkey was about to pounce.

Duntocher continued to press the 10 men hard and eventually with 25 minutes remaining they broke through. A high cross to the back post alluded Petro and floated into the net.

However Helensburgh didn't buckle in the closing stages and held on for an historic win.

Sam Gemmell, manager and founder of the team was delighted: "It's been six years since the team was formed, it gives me great satisfaction to see the team made up of players from the local area. There have been some low points along the way but today's performance makes everything worthwhile.

"Its been a great season, finalists in two out of three cups and finishing third in the league isn’t such a bad record. "
