HELENSBURGH came from a goal down to progress in the League Cup with a 2-1 win away to Greenock-based Bellaire last Saturday thanks to goals from Stuart and Steven Bailey.

With the teams having played twice previously in the league this season and Bellaire having the bragging rights it was going to be a well contested affair, and the Burgh lads started up in a fine mood and quickly settled down into a well drilled outfit.

They controlled large swathes of the first half with some excellent football with the midfield trio of Park, Rowe and Bailey running the show.

Despite the fancy football chances were at a premium with most of the shots being fired straight at the keeper.

The closest the visitors had to show for their efforts was a shot from Kirk that rattled the bar with Walker unable to find the net with the follow up header.

But despite dominating the first half Helensburgh conceded the first goal.

A free kick was floated in from 35 yards out and as the defence watched the ball sail over their heads the Bellaire striker took advantage to reacting the fastest to poke the ball past Cavanna.

Not downhearted the visitors again laid siege to the Bellaire net and could not find a way through.

However they managed to get back on level terms just before the break.

Park won a free kick 25 yards out and with the defence expecting a cross into the centre. but Stuart Bailey caught them unaware, curling the ball into the back of the net.

The second half continued much like the first with Burgh playing fine possession football without managing to break down a resolute Bellaire defence.

As the match continued the home team decided that the long ball was the order of the day and started hitting them up to their tall striker.

He was well marshalled by Makeham and Meader and when his chance came he was denied a shot at goal by a terrific block from Sinclair.

With time running out the visitors manage to snatch the win.

McKerron dispossessed the Bellaire player out on the right wing.

Some terrific footwork gave him enough space to have time to see the run across the box by Sinclair and his pass was straight into his path to allow Sinclair to have a shot at goal.

The Bellaire goalkeeper who made a fine block, but the ball fell to Steven Bailey who calmly dragged the ball to his left past a couple of defenders and coolly slotted the ball into the empty net.

This was a great start to the league cup section, and gives Helensburgh four straight wins in all competitions.
