RHU Amateurs got back to winning ways last Saturday, with a 5-0 win away to Rothesay Brandane in the Caledonian League.

Following two heavy defeats, and with several players missing, Rhu brought in McCulloch, Mitchell, Alden and Jenkins for their debuts, and they all played their part.

It was to be a good afternoon for the debutants with all playing their part.

Rhu were on top for most of the game but the goals didn’t arrive until the second half.

Rhu got off to a bright start and forced a couple of good saves from the home goalkeeper. It was Rhu doing the pressing and Rothesay hitting on the break in an open game.

The away side thought they had taken the lead after 20 minutes when McCulloch fired the ball home, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Rothesay were coming into the game now, and Rhu keeper Grindlay had to dive bravely at the striker’s feet to keep them out.

Rhu finished the half the stronger but there were no goals at the break.

With the wind behind them now, Rhu got the early break they had been looking for as Gary Stillwell broke on the left and his first-time cross was met sweetly by Graeme McCallum to put Rhu ahead.

Before Rothesay could get back in to the game, it was two.

David Holburn broke through the Rothesay defence and his shot came back off the keeper to the alert Stillwell, who made no mistake.

Rothesay rallied and Grindlay was called into action to keep Rhu two ahead.

McCallum had been giving Rothesay’s defence problems all afternoon and his clever play set up Patrick Scullion for Rhu’s third from the edge of the box.

Rothesay heads were down now as Rhu pushed for more and they didn’t have long to wait.

Calum Fowlis got to the byline on the left and his cross found Holburn, whose shot found the roof of the net.

The fifth and final goal was the best of the day with Rhu passing the ball through the Rothesay defence and McCulloch laying the ball off to Mitchell, who fired the ball home to cap a great day, and a great end to the year, for the local side.

Team: Grindlay, Fowlis, Kemp, George, Jenkins, Stillwell, Scullion, Leishman, Holburn, McCulloch, McCallum. Subs: Mitchell, Alden.
