BROOKS TADLOCK hit a late winner to make it six wins out of six this season for Helensburgh FC on Saturday.

Tadlock's late strike gave the Burgh a 1-0 win over Colquhoun United in the League Cup at Hermitage Academy.

The result put them level with Westcliff at the top of the group, with both teams now on six points.

Buoyed by their good run of recent form, which has taken them to the third rounds of the Scottish Amateur Cup and the West of Scotland Cup, Helensburgh settled into the game quickly and put pressure on the Colquhoun defence, but as they were to find out during the rest of the game, it would be a frustrating afternoon.

The well organised visitors kept their goalkeeper protected very well, and most of the Burgh attacks broke down without any undue pressure being applied.

As the home side pushed forward they left themselves vulnerable at the back, and Johns and Makeham had to look sharp on the odd occasion that the visitors threatened, which was mainly in the shape of their lone, but very powerful, striker.

The first half petered out with the two teams still level at 0-0 but the home side well in front in terms of pressure and territorial advantage.

Not much changed in the second half, with the Burgh side continually knocking at the door of the visitors.

An hour in and Tadlock looked as if he would open the scoring, but he rushed his opportunity and the ball flew out to safety.

By now it was just a constant flow against the brick wall that was becoming the Colquhoun defence, as wave after wave of attacks broke down on the visitors' 18 yard line.

So heavy was the pressure that Burgh goalkeeper O’Brien hardly had his hands on the ball in the second half.

With the clock ticking towards 90 minutes and stalemate looking like the only result the deadlock was finally broken.

Helensburgh substitute Dougie Black threaded a delightful ball through the defence into the path of Tadlock, and the big striker held off the last Colquhoun defender and nipped the ball past the keeper to ensure the Burgh team's 100 per cent start to the season remained intact.
