SCOTLAND debutant Scott McTominay had some particularly enthusiastic Helensburgh fans in the Hampden Park crowd last Friday night as he made his first appearance for the national team against Costa Rica.

Members of Scott’s family, who hail from Helensburgh, travelled with Ardencaple FC players and coaches to the national stadium to watch the Manchester United midfielder make his first appearance for the full Scotland team.

Ardencaple coach Craig Holborn revealed: “Scott’s dad, Frank, is an ex Caple player and keeps in regular touch with one of his old team-mates, club secretary Euan Birss.

“In fact, Scott himself has also been very supportive and has previously donated a match-ball signed by the Manchester United first team squad, matchday tickets and a pair of his own football boots.

"All items featured in Caple’s auction at its annual ‘Goals and Glamour’ sports dinner and helped raise much-needed funds to support the club’s continued growth.”

Caple’s 2006 squad were treated to a special visit to watch their Scotland heroes, courtesy of the SFA and Wilson’s of Rhu who very kindly laid on a luxury coach to provide transportation to and from the national stadium.

Despite Scotland suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat from a team en-route to the World Cup finals in Moscow this summer, the young Caple players thoroughly enjoyed the occasion – as did Scott’s relatives who will proudly remember him winning his first international cap.

Euan Birss commented “We are very grateful to the SFA for providing match tickets and to Wilson’s of Rhu for laying on the transport. We had spare capacity on the coach so I mentioned to Frank McTominay that we would be delighted to host his family members as this would allow them all to travel together to attend such an important match in young Scott’s career.”
