Helensburgh FC’s 2003 team chalked up a 4-2 away win over Greenock which ended their visitors’ hopes of winning the league title.
Greenock needed a win to keep their championship hopes alive, but it was Helensburgh who made the brighter start, with several early shots on goal before a Cowie corner was headed home by Powell to open the scoring.
The pressure from the visitors continued, and when Haughie was brought down inside the area the referee awarded a penalty, with Haughie himself doubling the lead from the spot.
Helensburgh reached half-time 2-0 ahead, but despite making five substitutions after the interval they didn’t let the pace slip, adding a third after Haughie played a nice ball through to Meredith to lob over the keeper.
Greenock reduced Helensburgh’s lead to 3-2 with 17 minutes left, but the visitors refused to panic, and a second penalty made sure of the points after Haughie was again brought down, though this time it was Nicholson who slotted home from the spot.
Squad: Burton, Montieth, Nicholson, Powell, Sharkey, Haughie, Hamilton, Mckillop, Niven, Meredith, Cowie, Cormack, Stokes, Garrick, Baird.
Sunday’s win added to a great end-of-season run for Helensburgh, who have now chalked up five wins in their last seven matches, including a first win over local rivals Ardencaple by the thumping margin of 10-1.
Helensburgh will face Greenock again in the Michael McGinley Cup final on Saturday, June 2, with Helensburgh hoping to retain the trophy they won in 2017.
