Helensburgh U13 6 Goldenhill U13 1
HELENSBURGH made it two league wins in a row with an outstanding team performance against a strong Gowdie team.
Before a ball was kicked, Gowdie were three places above them in the table and with Burgh missing several regular first team players, a tough day at the office looked likely.
Craig Petro was given his debut while there were rare starts for Sam Court and Gerrard Warrender.
The first half started off with both teams sharing the possession.
However, a missed clearance by Eddie Bell allowed the Goldenhill striker through on goal and while Charlie Kemmett narrowed the angle, he was beaten by an excellent finish.
Going a goal down in fact spurred the Burgh players on and immediately they were playing better football.
Their improved play was rewarded with the equaliser just before half-time as Billy Drover latched onto a through ball from Lewis Hutchison and expertly finished.
Burgh made a couple of changes at half-time and, believing they could win, the game became largely one-way traffic save for a couple of Gowdie counter attacks.
Two goals in quick succession put Helensburgh ahead for the first time in the match.
A good corner from Callum Gray landed at the back post where Jack Crawford caught it on the half volley with his right foot, giving the keeper no chance.
From kick-off, Helensburgh quickly regained possession and a good passing move put Billy Drover through on goal.
But the Gowdie keeper pulled off a great save to deny him, only for the ball to rebound into the path of Warrender who smashed the ball in first time with his left foot.
The game was soon out of Gowdie"s reach when Stuart Raynor picked the ball up just outside the box, took on a couple of defenders and excellently lobbed the keeper.
As the Gowdie heads went down, Burgh kept their discipline and earned numerous free-kicks.
From one of these, John Miller floated the ball into the box from just inside the Goldenhill half and Raynor netted his second and his side"s fifth.
Just before the final whistle, McAuley Whitehead won a 50/50 ball in the centre circle, with it breaking to Jack Crawford who played a neat ball for Drover to outmuscle the defence and bag a brace of his own.
An outstanding result which delighted the club coaches.
