The side followed up a victory over Renton by welcoming another local team to Helensburgh when they played host to Dumbarton Wanderers, a fixture that has become a regular occurrence as both teams look ahead to the new season.

Burgh produced an impressive first half performance that saw them pull 2-0 ahead through goals from Sinclair and Addie, ableit against the run of play.

But, it was the visitors who bounced back in the second half with three goals that handed Wanderers a close victory with the Burgh lads tiring somewhat in the second period — only Paul Cavanna’s goalkeping performance managed to keep the score as tight.

At the weekend the boys then travelled to Coatbridge to face Bridgewell.

The side obviously didn’t suffer a hangover from the previous game as they rushed into a 5-0 lead after only 20 minutes. David Sinclair grabbed a quick hat trick, whilst goals from Scott Petro and Calum Stone made it five for the half.

Bridgewell tried their best to get back into the tie but Burgh’s quick passing and movement ensured that their opponents never gained any momentum.

Helensburgh continued their performance into the second half and once again fired home another five goals wuth Gordon Brodie’s overhead kick and Ross MacDonald’s pile driver the pick of the bunch — the other goals coming from Ryan Jones and Scott Petro, who bagged two to give himself a hat trick.

Kris Milne, Burgh coach, was quick to praise the boys’ attitude in both games.

He said: “Despite a changing squad and a couple of different formations being tried out they have given everything and made it clear to us that they all want to be in the starting eleven when the league games start, “It makes it difficult for the management team but in a good way and we have another couple of opportunities to tinker with it until then but the squad is looking good and we are hoping that we will be able to compete with the other teams in the league far better than past seasons.“
