Speaking after Dumbarton’s 1-0 win over Falkirk at the Rock, which moved Sons 13 points ahead of eighth placed Alloa, Agnew reassured fans that the team would not be happy with having all but achieved their Championship status next season.

A sixth placed finish would represent a terrific season for Sons, after finishing fifth last year and having to do battle with Hearts, Hibs and Rangers this season.

Raith managed a 2-1 win against Hibs on Saturday and are nine points ahead of Dumbarton in that sixth position. However with Sons having won two in a row and with games still to come against relegation candidates Cowdenbeath and Alloa, as well as a home tie with Raith on the final day of their season, Agnew thinks it is achievable.

He told Advertiser Sport: “I think we have to look at the team ahead of us and try to catch them. That is certainly the aim now, we are not going to put our feet up.

“We need to continue to win games for our own pride and for the supporters as well. It is important that we keep doing everything properly and I can assure everyone we will be doing exactly that.” As the season and players contracts wind down, thoughts for many of the Sons squad will turn to where their future might lie.

Agnew is now in his fourth season at the club and he is keen to extend his Sons stay beyond this summer when his current deal expires.

He said: “Since I have been at the club we have had a lot of success and I love it here. There is still six games to go, I’ll give my best in them and then sit down with the manager and take it from there.”
