ARDENCAPLE and Drumchapel United recently took to the field in a match held to honour the memory of Gary Andrews.

Three generations of the Andrews family turned out to watch the two teams contest the Gary Andrews Memorial Trophy.

Spectators on the day witnessed some terrific football on display but the main reason for this fixture was to commemorate and celebrate Gary’s life, two years after he sadly passed away following a battle with cancer.

Gary’s son Joshua proudly captained the Ardencaple 2003 age group and was cheered on by a big crowd, including his mum Kelly, his gran and his aunts.

However despite a brave performance, Caple were just edged out 4-3 by their talented opponents. Everyone on the day was a winner however, especially the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, which received a donation of £275 raised by Kelly and her friends and family.

Kelly said: “I would like to thank everyone associated with Ardencaple FC for all the support that they have provided over the past two years to myself and Gary’s family and particularly to Joshua.

“It is really comforting to have Gary remembered in such a positive and enjoyable way, he would have loved this.” Craig Holborn, Ardencaple FC’s chairman added: “Gary was devoted to Joshua and was also an extremely supportive parent, helping us whenever he could.

“Kelly has taken on his legacy and dedicates a lot of her personal time to our club. We pride ourselves on being a family club and it is our privilege to be involved in this and to help in any way that supports Joshua, Kelly and their family.

“I’d like to say thanks to our coach Rik Murray and our committee for organising the event and also pay tribute to the opposition Drumchapel United for playing their part in such a sporting occasion.”
