Over 100 members attended the AGM in the clubhouse on Thursday, January 23 which coincided with the opening of the newly refurbished Bar.

At the meeting Alan Bell was elected as club captain, Viv Peck as captain of the ladies section and John Laverty as an honorary member of the club John Laverty joins five other current honorary members in recognition of his outstanding services to the club. John served the club as its inaugural Chairman for four years and instigated many of the changes to the management and structure of the club in order to maximise efficiency.

After the meeting John said: “It was both unexpected and a pleasure to be recognised by the club with such a prestigious award.

“It was rewarding to work with the captains and management committee over the last few years, addressing the club’s finances and improving its services to members, I shall carry this award with pride.” The club is progressing positively and this was reflected by Chairman, Murray Waddell, who said: “We are well on our way to being the best moorland course in the West of Scotland, if not the whole of Scotland.

“We have all seen the massive improvement in the condition of the course and are now developing a first class practice area.

“It is always pleasing when visitors remark how welcome they are made by members, this also applies to new members joining Helensburgh Golf Club who find it doesn’t take long to become part of the club.” The meeting agreed an additional intermediate membership category for 30-33-year-olds which will ease the financial burden that they would have faced by moving straight into full membership and it also agreed a modest, below inflation, increase in subscription rates.
