HELENSBURGH Golf Club held their annual member/guest day on Sunday.

This year, the club also had a Friendship Cup member/member competition running alongside for those members without a guest. The format was a stableford greensome with Phillipo James Madonia and his guest, Fraser Makeham of Erskine GC, collecting first prize of a Powakaddy golf bag each, with an impressive score of 44 points.

Both their fathers kindly stepped up to receive their prizes as the boys were unable to attend the prizegiving. In second place was John Friel and his guest Lee Gibson of Cardross GC with 40 points. John and Lee’s better inward half narrowly relegated to third place, Jim McKenzie and Gary Higham of Prestwick St. Nicolas GC, also with 40 points. Fraser Makeham had the longest drive at the 18th, while Robert Eden from East Kilbride GC won nearest the pin at the par three 11th.

The Friendship Cup was won, with 43 points, by Helensburgh’s Phil English and David Gordon. Bill McKeirnan and Ed Sommerville came close second with 42 points.

It is perhaps indicative of the summer we’ve all suffered this year that the Spring Cleaning Trophy did not manage to get played until last Saturday when 100 entrants braved yet another windy day.

John Friel appeared yet again on the leader board when he and the Club’s Vice-Captain, Ian Irving, secured the trophy with 44 points. Graeme Proud and Mark Birnie, with 41 points, had a better inward half, nudging Gordon English and Wylie Robertson, also 41points, into third place.

Only 30 players entered this month’s Ormond Medal. Bob Berry (19) was over all winner with a nett 67. Other leading scores were: Division 1: Simon Barras (2) 69; Terry Smith (2) 69; Steven Scott (12) 70; Bill MacDonald (11) 70; Jim McKenzie (12) 71.

Division 2: Bob Berry (19); Ewen Cameron (17) 70; Ray Ford (13) 71; Liam Hanson (18) 72; Crawford Howat (18) 73.

Division 3: Andy Stewart (24) 75; Stewart Fraser (21) 77; Bill McKeirnan (24) 78; Alan Armstrong (21) 80; Mick Bone (21) 83.

Last Thursday, the McIntyre Seniors lost 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 playing at home to Balmore GC. The reserves won their game 4&3.
