Helensburgh Golf Club celebrated the 145th Open Championship by holding a four-man Open Scramble.

Eighteen teams set off from a shotgun start at 9am on a wet and cold morning. The winning team of Phil English, Jamie Francis, Bill Macdonald and Graham Thorley brought home an impressive nett 50.4 to take the honours.

Following in close second with nett 51.8 were Bill McKeirnan, Mick Bone, Brian Penman and Ed Somerville. Third with nett 52.6 were John Simmons, Ramsay Howarth, Karl Powell and Ian Porter.

Saturday saw the annual Ramsay Howarth Trophy in the form of a two-man scramble Stableford.

The winning pair was Ronnie McKay and Gordon English with 47 points. Second were Dave Lutwyche and Gerry Black with 44 points and third with 43 came John Simmons and Ian Porter.

On Wednesday, July 13 Helensburgh GC held its annual Seniors’ Open, the Heron Cup, sponsored by Helensburgh’s Ruby Restaurant.

Dave Lutwyche (20) took the honours with 41 Stableford points. In second was Bob Berry (18) with 40 points and third was David Reid (13) with 38 points.

Gloria Hotels, on July 9, sponsored a qualifying Stableford round at HGC. The winners were Wyllie Robertson and Gordon English with 45 points followed by Peter Haggarty and Alan Scott in second place with 44 points.

Wyllie and Gordon are now invited to take part in the regional final at Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire in September. Nearest the pin at the 11th was won by Steve Donald.
