On Sunday, Helensburgh Golf Club held its annual Member/Guest Stableford played by members with guests from other Clubs. Alongside, ran the annual Friendship Cup for Helensburgh members only. 54 entrants took part in the 2 competitions in relatively dry but very windy conditions.

In the Member/Guest, 3 pairs all had 40 points and places were decided by bih. Helensburgh’s Alan Scott with partner S. McHard, Dundonald GC, came home to win the Trophy with 40 points and a better inward half of 21. In 2nd place were Fraser Mc Cathie and Gibson Beattie, Cardross GC, with bih 20 pts, and in 3rd came Graham Crowhurst and M. Gallagher, Vale of leven GC, with bih 20pts.

The Friendship Cup also produced close results with 2 pairs scoring 41 points. Winners were Andrew Bennett and Lou Carrier 41pts with bih 22, closely followed by brothers, Andy and Steve Donald, 41pts and bih 21. Helensburgh ladies, Lynn McCathie and Katy Rogers took 3rd with 39 pts bih 19, closely beating into 4th, Danny Kemp and Jim Purdon also with 39 pts but bih 18.

The BMW Challenge had its final round last Saturday. Results were:

Division 1: Douglas Willoughby[5] 41pts; Michael McKechnie[7] 39pts; Bill MacDonald [9] 36pts.

Division 2: Ian Porter[17] 39 pts; Gordon English[15] 36pts; Ronald Holmes[17] 35pts;

Division 3: Lou Carrier[22] 37pts; Malcolm Hyatt[27] 35pts; Tony Morris[21] 33pts.

Wednesday 3rd August saw the August round of the Ormond Medal. Results were:

Division 1: Keith Baird[6] nett 64; Terry Smith[3] nett 68; Alan Scott[5] nett 69.

Division 2: Norman Rodger[20] nett70; Peter Hillis[16] nett72; Billy Trail[17] nett76.

Division 3: Jim Lowden[21] nett 72; Jim Purdon[21] nett76; Brian Penman[27] nett 78.

The Haliburton Trophy is an annual stroke play event where Juniors play Helensburgh one day and Cardross the next. This year, Paul Dunn, Helensburgh was winner with Robert Laird, Cardross, runner up.
