NO fewer than 340 rounds of golf were played in the course of three days in a busy week at Helensburgh Golf Club.

The first of the club’s annual open competitions took place on Wednesday, May 31, with the Seniors Mixed Rosebowl, sponsored by The Coffee Club.

The weather obliged with one of the best days of the season so far, and 36 couples went out on the course. Scoring was good with a very tight result.

Overall winners with an impressive 38 points were Angela and John Booth from Auchterarder. On 37 points in second place after a count back were home couple Stuart Latimer and Anne Barty, pipping George and Doreen Sneddon.

The best front nine prize went to Rona and Keith Sharp of Douglaston (20points) and best back nine went to local couple Lynn and Fraser McCathie (22 points).

The club hosted the Helensburgh Lions Golf Day on Thursday for the 28th successive year with 162 players competing on a predominantly wet day for a wide range of quality prizes.

The ‘Creaking Bones’ Helensburgh Golf Club team of Alan Barker, Stuart Buchanan and Nick Knox won the inaugural Geoff Brewster Trophy, presented in memory of Geoff, who was a stalwart member of both the Lions and Golf clubs.

On Saturday another large field of 108 members and guests played in the annual ‘Friendship Competition’ generously sponsored by Coop Funeralcare.

The pairs played a Betterball competition off the medal tees and 90 per cent handicap.

The prize for the Helensburgh pairing went to George Cairns and Ewen Cameron whose better inward half, eased them ahead of Gordon English and Wyllie Robertson, on countback both having amassed 45 points.

The member and guest prize went to Harry Fazal and Gus Davidson (Cardross GC) with another high score of 46 and leaving a countback for second place to be won by Michael White and Stephen Robertson (Duff House Royal GC, Banff) on 42 along with Gordon McConnell and John Burke.
