WHILE Jordan Speith was battling his way to victory at Royal Birkdale last Sunday, it was Ben Canham who stole the show at Helensburgh Golf Club's annual open scramble.

Canham landed a hole-in-one at the par three ninth hole, helping to secure first place for himself, daughter Gemma, and husband and wife Peter adn June Haggarty.

A second Helensburgh member had a hole in one last week when Alan Latham scored an ace at the 200 yard par three 15th at Douglas Park on Thursday while he was playing in the Helensburgh McIntyre Seniors team.

On Friday, Helensburgh Ladies held their Open Tri-am, sponsored by Sue Aikman, Ardardan.

There was 33 teams taking part, several from some distance away, including Melrose and Dalbeattie.

Conditions were quite tricky with a strong easterly wind and rain at times.

Ann Shanks, Liz McLean and Rona Agnew made up the winning team with an impressive net 61, securing the Ardardan Vase.

On the home front, June Haggarty, Babs Robertson and Gail Waddell took second prize and the Milne Trophy for best home team.

In third place were Ludka Aitken, Libby Johnston and Gemma Canham, all pictured with HGC lady captain, Anita McLaren and Ardardan sponsor, Sue Aikman.

Saturday saw the July round of the Anderson Cup. Leading scores were:

Division 1: First Ryan Cleland 73-4c=69, second Graeme Proud 75-4c=71, third Alan Birnie 77-6c=71.

Division 2: First David M Kennedy 85-18c=67, second Colin Spiers 83-15c=68, third Sandy Bulloch 84-16c=68.

Division 3: First Craig Ross Smith 97-25c=72, second George Mundie 95-22c=73, third Michael Stephen 97-22c=75.

Week 11 of the Eclectic had a turnout of 27 players. The winner was Steve Ford with 23 points followed by Steve Scott on 21 points.

There were three winners of the 2s: Steve Ford, Calum Kennedy and Alan Drysdale.

Paul Duerden is still setting the pace with 33 eclectic points but close behind him on 32 points is Mark Patterson.
