Fergie rounds up the stars

A HOST of sporting greats were spotted on the banks of Loch Lomond on Monday.

And they were all in charitable mood as they took part in the inaugural Great Scots Cup at the Carrick golf course.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was this year"s club captain and he welcomed a plethora of Scottish sporting legends to the popular new course.

The one time Scotland football manager was joined by current Scotland boss George Burley and Helensburgh-based Rangers manager Walter Smith.

Although already well versed in the ways of golf, the trio were given a last minute lesson from former Ryder Cup winning captain Bernard Gallacher.

Former Open champion Paul Lawrie and Carrick sponsored Ladies European Tour player Clare Queen were also on hand to provide the sports stars with a short game clinic.

Lawrie even brought along his replica of the famous Open Championship Claret Jug which gave Sir Alex the chance to get yet another trophy in his hands.

Popular Scotland rugby player Gavin Hastings, Rangers assistant manager Ally McCoist and Olympic gold medalist Alan Wells were some of the other great names to lend support to the event.

The Great Scots Cup is in aid of the Elizabeth Hardy Ferguson Trust Fund and CHAS, Children"s Hospice Association Scotland.

Eighteen teams took part in the team stableford event which was won by Wells" team with a total of 82 points. His four man team comprised Lloyd Booker, Ken Brown and Bill Dixon.

Gavin Hastings was named the individual Great Scot winner.
