THOUSANDS of golf fans

watched as Graeme McDowell kept his cool to win the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.

Northern Ireland ace McDowell shot a closing round of 68 to finish the tournament on 13 under par - two ahead of South Africa"s James Kingston.

The Ulsterman also saw off the likes of heavyweights Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson to seal victory on the Bonnie Banks and pocket a cheque for £500,000.

Despite the dismal weather, spectators flocked to the Bonnie Banks for the four-day event.

And a delighted McDowell was only too happy to repay their dedication with a scintillating performance. He said: 'I"m happy with the way I"ve been able to stay focused to win at such a spectacular course.

'It"s been a tough weekend"s golf and it"s a massive relief to win.

'My mum, dad and family are here today so it"s pretty special.'

Scotland"s Stephen Gallacher, nephew of former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher, shot the joint best round of the final day with 7 under par 64 to move him to 8 under for the tournament.

Meanwhile Paul Lawrie"s final round 70 left him finishing the tournament on 7 under par.

Of the other Scots in the field, Andrew Oldcorn closed with a 73 to end on 1 over; with Alasdair Forsyth also signing off 1 over.
