LAST Sunday produced a particularly pleasing example of the trickery of fate when Helensburgh Golf Club members were faced with wintry conditions for what was scheduled to have been the last week of the seven-week Johnnie Walker Winter League.
This status, however, changed to that of the penultimate week when week two had to be postponed because of adverse conditions, so the final round is now programmed for next Sunday.
Among the competitors who had fought their way round the course in the morning of week two before play was finally suspended was retired teacher John Craig, playing with a reserve taking the place of his normal partner Stephen Donald, who was otherwise committed.
Despite the dreadful conditions, John and his colleague managed to put together a quite remarkable score of 49 points which, had play continued, would almost certainly have ended as the best score of the day.
Instead, the only reward John received was a cut in his handicap.
Last Sunday, John, reunited with Stephen, endured similarly difficult conditions with the weather improving as the day went on. Having set off to a good start, they did not allow the intermittent showers to deflect them from their goal to garner a winning total of 51 points.
Runners-up were Stuart Latimer and Harry Stenhouse with 47 points, and John McMillan and Jack Miles were third, also with 47 points but a poorer inward half.
In the team event, league leaders Oban consolidated their position with an impressive 180 points to increase the margin between them and Bells, the runners-up, to 26 points. Blue Label lie third with 852 points, two ahead of Red Label.
With one week to go the eclectic competition looks to be going down to the wire. Stuart Latimer and Harry Stenhouse, in addition to being runners-up for the day, improved their eclectic score by four points to go to the top of the table, two clear of the Norman Rodger/John Ward and Dennis English/Barry Richardson pairings.
