A TOTAL of 109 competitors took part in the May qualifier for the Anderson Cup at Helensburgh Golf Club.
While the weather was variable, but mainly pleasant the testing conditions raised the Competition Scratch Score to the maximum allowable of 72.
The best net score returned was by Campbell Watt whose 67 would have been so much better, but for a pair of treble bogeys at the last two holes.
Leading scores: First Class - 68 Scott Barlass (4); 69 Stephen Donald (11), Terry Smith (4); 70 David Gethin (7); 71 John Fugler (8); 72 Stuart Niven (12), Derek McCallum (7), Alan Scott (3), Ron McKay (11). Second Class - 67 Campbell Watt (19); 71 Karl Powell (14); 73 Alan Hughes (17), Roger Waigh (16); 74 Ramsay Howarth (14), Mel Newton (18), Tony Morris (20). Third Class - 68 Brian Grant (21); 74 Jim McKillop (22); 75 A Wark (21); 76 Dave Lutwyche (22), Alastair Turnbull (25), Dennis English (26).
Helensburgh visited Dumbarton Golf Club in the Thomson McCrone League.
John Ford and Derek Whiteside provided an encouraging start with a win by 3 and 2. Karl Powell and his partner, the former Dumbarton Boys Champion Ramsay Howarth, provided a halved match and a half point, but despite fighting performances from Don Griffin/David Hogg and Sandy Bulloch/Kevin Robb, the Sons of the Rock earned full points on a 3½ to 1½ margin.
Helensburgh ladies played host to their counterparts from Old Ranfurly in the fourth round of the Mail on Sunday Club Competition.
They had high hopes of progressing to the next round and these were encouraged by solid wins of 3 and 2 by team captain Linda Moffat and Brenda McDonald.
Two of the remaining three matches ended on the 18th green with the locals being edged out by the visitors in each case thus ending the Burghs teams" aspirations by a margin of 3-2.
On the domestic scene, 18 couples participated in the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes Stableford in cold but very windy weather.
Alison Fairbairn, partnered by Claire Harper took the honours with 32 points followed by Fiona Gilchrist and Jean Ramsay with 31 points. They edged out Babs Robertson and Sheena Birt by virtue of the better inward half. Brenda McDonald/Anne Carswell had 29 points followed by Linda Moffat/Carolyn Stait and Fiona Thomson/Ann Sills with both pairings returning 26 points.
