DOWNPOURS washed out almost the complete weekend programme of events at Helensburgh Golf Club.

The Ormond Medal, the Shotgun Foursomes and the Ladies Golf Foundation Brooch will all now be rescheduled.

Results in team events were similarly disappointing, with the club"s junior ream returning from a McIntyre League trip to Cardross empty-handed.

The senior team produced a fighting performance at Hayston Golf Club in defence of their McIntyre title, but to no avail.

The number of counting matches had by mutual agreement been reduced to four and three of them were decided on the challenging short last hole adjoining the club house, where local knowledge provides a huge advantage for the home team.

So it proved with only Alan Letham and Alan Robinson returning a win and Hayston taking the points with a margin of 3-1.

In the 5 to 8 competition, team captain Tom Griffiths took on a playing role for the visit to Clober Golf Club. In the revamped format, the points go to the team which returns the greater difference between aggregate holes up and aggregate holes down from all the ties.

As a result of a misunderstanding, one of the Helensburgh team failed to appear, leaving his partner to play against the better ball of his opponents on his own.

On any course this represents a major challenge, but on the tricky Clober course it is an impossible burden and the eight down result swung the match in favour of the homesters despite a fighting 6up win by Murray Waddell and Sam Gibson to maintain their own unbeaten record.

The Ladies provided the only cheer of the week when they beat Balmore Golf Club in the Harper Kennedy League at home by four and a half points to two and a half points. Local victors were Linda Moffat (2/1), Jackie Lightfoot (2/1), Katy Rogers (4/3), Carolyn Stait (8/7) and Anne Carswell (sq).
