FIVE years ago, aged 23, Craig Brown had to give up his golfing career to accommodate the joint pressures of married life and developing his professional career.

This year he was able to take advantage of the club"s Open Day to return to his favourite sport.

Ten days ago he thought he had taken part in his first medal since rejoining the club and did in fact return what would have been a winning score.

Unfortunately not all of the paperwork had been completed timeously and the score could not count. Justice. however. was seen to be done immediately when last Saturday he led the field to win the the McRobert Thistle Trophy with a score of 39 Stableford points.

Leading scores: 39points - Craig Brown (16); 38 - Graham Reid (7); 37 - Ben Canham (24); 36 - Andy Bennett (13), John Craig (18), Lou Carrier (22), Derek McCallum (7); 35 - Jim Graham (11), Terry Smith (4), Sandy Bulloch (14), Jim McCrae (25).

In the domestic scene, the most recent Friday night fun night played in Greensome format over 11 holes attracted a record entry of 46 players.

And it produced a win with a remarkable total of 30 points from former champion Peter Haggarty and new member Celia Taylor who has joined the club recently with her husband Eric.

This friendly competition is open to all members with or without official handicaps with individual members turning up on the night. The competition is rounded off with an excellent optional meal for players and supporters.

Helensburgh Ladies held their First Championship Qualifier in demanding conditions. Alisoun Fairbairn (15) took pole position with 77, one stroke ahead of runnerup Gemma Canham (15) who was in turn one stroke ahead of Claire Harper (15).
