HELENSBURGH Golf Club"s gents team are now in pole position to emulate last year"s seniors in the McIntyre League.
The veteran campaigners gained the title of champions after many barren years and the last time the gents trophy was in the hands of the Burgh Club was in 1965.
Last Wednesday, they visited Clober Golf Club in Milngavie, where over the years, aspirations of visiting teams have been shattered with regularity.
An away win would bring three points and maintain the 100 per cent record so a solid start was vital.
Wins by a margin of four and three by David Parlane and Terry Smith provided that.
Victory on the penultimate green by Peter Haggarty and last green wins by David MacGregor and Simon Barras secured the victory and a halved match from Simon Berry improved the margin of the win to 5½ points to 2½ points.
The record remains intact and so too remains the personal record of Terry Smith. Three days later, greenkeeper Terry, on the eve of his departure from the greenstaff to take up a new appointment at the base, won the captain"s prize for First Class with 40 Stableford points.
