AS has happened so often in the past, participants in Helensburgh Golf Club's popular winter league, again generously sponsored by Johnnie Walker, experienced idyllic conditions which belied the title of the event.
With all 80 competitors taking part the scene was set for keen scoring. Twenty handicapper Alistair Paton teamed up with his friend Iain Harrington with high hopes of a successful sortie in the sun.
Their outward half total of 22 points set them up to garner a clutch of two and three pointers on the way back to return a winning total of 46 points.
In second place were Douglas Lowe and Stewart Coutts with 45 points. They incidentally are team-mates with Alistair and Iain in Bells, which set an unassailable target of 174 points for the day, nine ahead of the field. In third place on 44 points were Steve Scott and Billy Green.
Helensburgh seniors completed their competition programme with an end of season senior stableford with 38 players participating.
Match and handicap secretary-elect Alan Latham led from the front with 41 points to encourage him to reflect on whether or not his own handicap of 11 is adequate. Runner-up was Alan Bell who, along with Kenny Hale, returned 38 points.
