Burgh golfers soldier on

PERFECT conditions greeted the 135 competitors who participated in Helensburgh Golf Club's annual captain's day when genial captain Tom Foster lavished generous hospitality on his foot soldiers.

The best card of the day was that of local motor engineer Alan Walker as he continued with a recent run of top 10 finishes with 42 stableford points to win the second class prize.

The first and third class prizes went to Colin Cameron and Dougie Mitchell respectively each with 40 points. The ladies prize was won by Katy Rogers with 36 points.

Fifty two participants enjoyed idyllic conditions for the June nine hole medal. Taking a day off from caddying at Loch Lomond, Bill Docherty accumulated 23 stableford points to lead the field by four strokes from a challenging foursome of Tommy Daly, Donald Macdonald, Charles Barbour and Dereck West.

Helensburgh ladies took part in the June medal incorporating the Gleneagles medal competition. Libby Johnson, club secretary and mother of promising junior golfer Robert Johnson, took the opportunity to demonstrate her own prowess in the sport when she won the Gleneagles medal with a nett score of 68 playing off 24.

This represented not only the best score in the Bronze Division but the best card returned by any of the 37 competitors. Runner-up in the bronze division was Ann Prime also playing off 24 with a nett 70.

Vyvian Stevenson (23) was third with a 75. In the silver division Ann Trail (18) carded a winning 71 two ahead of Claire Harper (14). Linda Moffatt (12) was one behind with a nett 74.

There were notable successes by Helensburgh ladies playing in open competitions in the area. The winners of the Paisley Ladies Triam Open were Carolyn Stait, Bobbie Latham and Chris Henderson while Gill Dunbar took the top prize in the Dalmally Ladies Open resulting in a handicap cut of 4.5. In outside leagues there were home wins in the Harper Kennedy against Glenbervie and in the Allander league against Clydebank. In the Anderson League Helensburgh gained an away draw against Balmore.

Wins by David Reid/Alan Latham (5/4), Crawford Howatt/Robin Gall (4/3) and a halved match by Ewen Baird/Jack Myles gave Helensburgh a comfortable win against Hayston Golf Club in their last match of the season in the Senior McIntyre League. In the last match for the Thompson McCrone League Helensburgh lost their last game at home against the Vale of Leven Golf Club.

John Ford/Craig Brown had the only win by 6/4 with Stevie Donald and Karl Powell weighing in with a halved match.

The Ramsay Howarth trophy for the friendly family foursomes was won by the father and son combo of Tim and Tom Hughes with 29 points, four points clear of John and Andrew Graham, Denise and Michael Donald and John and Dominic Ward all with 25 points.
