WINNERS: Lady captain Audrey Graham (right) presenting the chas and Wendy Miller Quaich to Dave and Irene Smith
THE long spell of pleasant weather continued for the July qualifier for the Breingan Medal held last Saturday at Helensburgh Golf Club with 110 members participating.
Encouraged by his success on captain's day Alan Walker produced a back to back winning card with a 64, six ahead of the competition standard scratch despite his handicap reduction which his previous success produced.
Now playing off 18 Alan went to the turn in gross 42. He set about the backward nine in determined fashion with double the number of pars and a nine-hole total of 40.
This prompted further action on the part of the Match and Handicap Secretary with Alan's handicap being reduced by another two strokes.

Helensburgh ladies enjoyed conducive conditions for their competition for the SLGA Brooch. It proved to be another stage in the victory path currently being blazed by house convener Carolyn Stait.
She set the scene with an outward half of 37, two over par. A backward four over 41 completed a card which contained ten pars, one birdie and seven bogeys all of the single variety.
In so doing, Carolyn added the SLGA Brooch to her trophy haul this season and had her handicap further reduced. In the silver division she was pursued by past Captain Doreen Sneddon (20) with a nett 67.
Current ladies champion Lynn McCathie (seven) was third with a nett 72. In the bronze division the consistent Gail Waddell (21) returned a 73 along with Maria Carling (26) but took the honours by virtue of a better inward half. In third place was June Aranci playing off 27 with a nett 74.
In the popular Open Tournament scene Helensburgh ladies rejoiced with the news that the Balmore Ladies Triam had been won by the three Carols, viz Bell, Young and Andrews with a nett score of 54.
Last Friday's fun night attracted an entry of 52 players when they competed for the Chas and Wendy Miller Quaich which was won by Dave and Irene Smith with 26 points.
Helensburgh juniors kept the club flag flying with a first round win against Windy Hill Golf Club in the Dumbartonshire Golf Union knock-out competition.
The format involves four singles and two foursomes and victory was secured by the four single matches with wins by James McKechnie (one up), Shaun Surgenor (2/1) and Dominic Taylor (2/1) and a halved match from Robert Johnson produced a victory for Helensburgh by a three and a half to a two and a half-margin.
