HELENSBURGH Golf Club'’s Senior Monthly Medal saw some low scoring on Wednesday, May 27.

Howard Turner (28) was rightly delighted with his net score of 62, only to have his joy short-lived, when Mick Bone (24) pipped him at the post with a crushing net 61 to steal victory.

Other low scores were: David Graham (19) 64, Lou Carrier (23) 66, Alan Scott (5) and David Tolhurst (13) both 67. Mick Bone, Howard Turner and David Graham all qualify for a place in the Medal Final later in the season.

On Thursday, May 28, Helensburgh hosted a Greenkeepers v HGC Committee match with greenkeepers not only from Helensburgh but also Loch Lomond, Crow Wood and Paisley.

A good day was enjoyed by everyone, especially the greenkeepers, who beat the committee, five games to one.

No doubt their superior course knowledge prevailed. This event also marked the departure of Derek McCallum. Derek began his apprenticeship with HGC in 1994. From 1998-2004, he worked at Dumbarton GC, also spending six months greenkeeping in Australia.

In 2004, he returned to HGC, to become depute course manager.

There were 105 entrants for the Crawford Lochhead Trophy last Saturday. Three players scored 37 points in this Stableford competition. After a countback, Alan Birnie (7) emerged in first place. Calum Kennedy (14) was runner up and in third place came Ray Ford (14) who also scored twos at the third and 16th par threes. Other scores were: Graeme Proud (5), Michael McKechnie (6), Alan Blackstock (12) and Steven Scott (11) all with 35 points.

Friday night is ‘Fun Night’ at HGC and last Friday evening a number of ladies and gents played 11 holes over the newly measured Blue Course. Results were: First: Linda Moffat and Ben Canham 42.

Second on count back: Katy Rogers and Howard Turner 38.

Third: Esme McRae and Stuart Graham 38. Stuart had the best individual score at 35 points.

Ladies report The winner of the Judy Horan Memorial Cup was a close run thing. Zoe Kemp (nett 73) prevailed on a count back from Ethel Smith who also returned a nett 73. In third place was Jackie Lightfoot with a nett 74. Apologies from Katy Rogers to Grace Martin for last week’s report. She was the winner of the Colgrain Cup and Golf Foundation Brooch not Zoe.

Junior team Last Sunday, HGC'’s junior team played at Clober GC in the McIntyre Junior League.

The match finished all square at 3-3. This earned Helensburgh a valued bonus point for getting a draw away from home. Well done to both Jacks who played superbly in very difficult windy, cold and wet conditions to claim two full points for the team.

The match went to the wire with Harry Pearce earning the draw on the 18th green. Helensburgh are in a good position in the league having won their first game at home against the Vale Of Leven. Helensburgh play host to Cardross next Sunday in what should be another close and exciting match.
