THINGS were looking up for Helensburgh Golf Club’s McIntyre Seniors last Thursday as they sealed a 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 win at home against Kirkintilloch GC.
David Gethin and Alistair McKenzie won 3&2. Alan Latham and Bob Berry won 4&3. Kenny Hale and Gordon Mickel halved their match while John Cleland and David Graham lost 5&4.
In the reserves, Mike Tait and David Russell won 7&5.
A fairly dry Saturday saw 84 entrants for August’s round of the Breingan Medal. Terry Smith, playing off three, once again displayed his golfing prowess with a top nett score of 67 and best inward half.
Leading scores were: Division One: Terry Smith (3) 67, David Gordon (7) 69, Alan Birnie (6), Stuart Latimer (12) 70, Gordon McGregor (7) 70.
Division Two: Ian Porter (18) 67, Richard G. Howard (18) 68, Peter Mundie (13) 69, Roger Waigh (17) 69, Steven Walker (14) 70, George Cairns (16) 70.
Division Three: Terry Smith Sr. (24) 67, Stephen Ford (22) 70, Alan Armstrong (21) 71, Stewart Fraser (21) 71, Ronald Holmes (21) 72.
Running alongside Saturday’s Breingan Medal was the McIlwraith Trophy. This is awarded to the best scoring gent, aged over 55, on the day. Both Peter Mundie (13) and Roger Waigh (17) brought home nett 69. However, congratulations go to Peter, who managed to clinch the trophy with a better inward half.
Entries are still being accepted for the club’s member/guest and member/member competition on Sunday, August 9. Entry fee £5 per couple.
The Ben Bouie Mixed Open at Helensburgh Golf Club took place on Sunday with 52 pairs taking part in the competition.
The winners of the Ben Bouie Cup and the Ardmore Trophy for the best Helensburgh pair were Libby Johnson and her son, Robert with 37 Stableford points.
Runners up on count back were Katy and Robin Rogers 37 points.
In third place were Maria Carling and Ben Canham with 36 points, again on count back over fourth place to Angie MacFarlane and Robert Campbell 36 points.
The scratch prize was won by Lynn and Fraser McCathie 27 points.
The prizes were presented by Alyson Gray, fiancée of Murray Waddell whose donation and continuing support of this event is greatly appreciated.
