School hockey teams give it some Welly

Print | Email

NINE hockey teams from Lomond played against Wellington School in Ayr at the weekend.

The first XI travelled to Doonside and in the first half the game was fairly even. Wellington scored first from a defensive error and it did not take Lomond long to equalise from a penalty corner with Conni Zehentmeier slotting the ball away two metres from the target.

At half-time it was 1-1 with Lomond needing better possession to improve their game. In the second half, Rebecca Lightfoot became more involved down the right hand side of the pitch and the team was awarded another penalty corner.

Rebecca scored from this opportunity before adding her second when Lomond counter attacked quickly.

Lomond continued to keep the pressure in the attacking area and it was Rachel Mansley who put the ball in the net from an accurate cross by Conni.

Nicola Skrastin sealed the 5-1 victory with an individual effort.

The second XI controlled most of the match and it was Florrie Black who opened the scoring from a placed shot past the goalkeeper.

The team dominated the play and Lomond's defence was not really tested throughout the match. In the second half, Camilla Mosley scored Lomond's second goal from the break down at a penalty corner.

The third goal was a great team goal where Florrie passed the ball to Emily Carroll, who sent the ball across to Sophie McDermott to smash home. The game finished 3-0 and Florrie Black was voted player of the match.

The third year team had a home match at Ardencaple and although the team started well they were beaten 3-0 by a stronger team. Cara Noble, who captained the team, worked extremely hard in defence and was voted player of the match. The second year team dominated the second half of the match and it was Holly Davidson who was able to give Lomond the lead. Unfortunately, Wellington managed to counter attack well and scored the equaliser in the last two minutes of the match. Lomond had to settle for a draw. Laura Dodson was player of the match for her distribution from defence.

The first years lost 4-0 to a better all round team. Lucy Metcalf made some excellent saves in goals and she kept the score down. Lomond had some pressure, but were unable to place the ball into the goals.

Bryony Hanson cleared the ball out of defence but the opposition was too strong in the second half. Lucy was voted player of the match.

The two Transitus teams travelled to Cambusdoon in Ayr and they played eight aside across the pitch. The A team dominated the game and won 7-0. Jodie Smith, Sarah Rijsdijk and Melissa Bannerman were all on the score sheet.

The B team played well and although Julia Currie gave Lomond the lead they had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

And the school also hosted its annual Hockey Festival Tournament on Tuesday March 2 at Ardencaple.

Eight schools travelled to Helensburgh from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The weather was perfect and allowed both sections of five teams to play in a round robin. In section One, Craigholme were eventual winners with Glasgow Academy a close runner-up, and in section two, George Watson's won the section with Hutchesons' and the High School of Glasgow equal on points for second place.

Cathy MacNaughton provided sandwiches, biscuits, home baking and refreshments upstairs in the dance studio with the help of T1 pupils and players and spectators were able to go and watch the matches from the balcony.

The tournament was timed and scored by the T1 pupils and they were very efficient with their clip boards and stopwatches. The whole afternoon was a glorious success and all the Transitus girls were involved in the hockey matches.
