BURST: Craig Stewart out paces the beleaguered Coatbridge defence

LOMOND had four teams playing on Saturday against Coatbridge High School.

Coatbridge are relatively new to school's rugby and represent the sterling effort being put in by Lanarkshire's Scottish Rugby Union's development officers.

Although playing under the Coatbridge banner, the players were from a number of different schools and surrounding rugby clubs.

They brought well over 80 boys to Helensburgh on Saturday morning, all of whom played the game in excellent spirit and reflected positively on their schools and clubs.

At first XV level, Coatbridge started the game strongly and put Lomond under intense physical pressure in the first 10 minutes.

But as the game wore on Lomond started to dominate the contact area and provided some excellent linking moves between the forwards and backs.

Clinical finishing saw Lomond go into the interval leading 37-5.

The second half continued in the same vein and tries were shared out between the team.

However, special mention must go to David Tyler who scored two good tries and was unlucky not to get a third. The final score was 59-5 to the home side.

This was the second consecutive week where Lomond have fielded an S3/S4 side and the knowledge gained from the previous week proved invaluable as the team functioned well and put in a solid display to win 49-0.

The team displayed very good continuity skills and took advantage of the firm surface and fine weather to play some entertaining running rugby.

Andrew Laing scored a hat-trick and Fillan Kennedy grabbed two scores. Magnus Brown also scored his first try for the school.

The S2 team gave a good all round performance and came out victors by 38-0.

Lomond dominated the match from start to finish and played some excellent continuity rugby. The S1 team put in their best performance of the season to win by 28-17. This was a huge improvement in performance from previous weeks.

Finally, while the national team may have ground out a 15-15 draw against the Auld Enemy on Saturday, Lomond S2s had no difficulty in disposing of their English visitors with a thumping 34-0 win over King's School, Tynemouth, on Friday.

This annual fixture sees Lomond and King's alternate between Helensburgh and Newcastle with the boys staying in each others homes.

Lomond played an exciting brand of rugby and scores from Harry Salisbury, Andrew Ram and two tries each from Eoin McFadyen and Andrew Barrie ensured that the spectators were well entertained.
