CHEQUE: David MacLachlan, of Helensburgh and District Round Table, with Ross
A LUCKY Burgh youngster is to compete at the Laser 4.7 World Championships at Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Thailand as part of the British team this Easter.
Ross Stanley-Whyte, 14, of Lomond School, is a member of the Laser 4.7 national squad and was chosen to join the team after a series of selection events held at the end of last year.
Since then he has been busy training hard, despite the snow, in preparation for the competition. Due to financial constraints the RYA have not been able to provide funding for the team.
So a huge thanks must go to the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, the Clyde Cruising Club, the Mudhook Yacht Club and Helensburgh and District Round Table for their kind support, along with SailLaser Scotland, at Strathclyde Country Park, which has very generously helped with equipment.
Ross is very excited at the prospect of representing his country at such a big event, although it will be a very challenging competition, sailing against some of the best young laser sailors in the world, and in conditions very different from his home waters off Helensburgh.
Ross, however, is determined to do his best and gain as much experience as he can before he heads to France in the summer to compete in the European Championships.
