TOP OF THE CLASS: All of the award winners with their trophies

UNDER wintry conditions Lomond School held its annual staff versus pupils hockey match at the school's all weather facilities.

A formidable pupils' team, led by Nicola Skrastin, took an early lead midway through the first period.

Moments later the pupils threatened to extend their lead when a quick ball from defence to the right-wing and a sweeping ball into the box narrowly missed goal by advancing striker David Tyler.

This attack sparked the staff into action, and minutes later saw a strong run through the middle by Mr Fitzgerald to produce the equalising goal.

In the second period the game opened up as the aging staff tired.

Again, strong midfield play by the pupils, and an incisive finish saw the pupils once again take the lead.

This lead was to last until the closing minutes of the game when Mrs Taylor and Mr Fitzgerald combined smartly in the midfield.

A mesmerising run from the latter out-paced the pupils' defence, culminating in a superb strike for the equalising goal.

This was a very capable pupils' team and credit must go to Nicola Skrastin and her team for a well organised and gritty performance.

On the same evening the senior pupils held their end of season rugby and hockey dinner.

This was a successful evening and special thanks must go to the school's catering staff, magnificently led by Cathy McNaughton who laid on a superb three-course meal. After dinner speeches and awards were presented by headmaster Mr Simon Mills, Mr Dominic Fitzgerald, Mrs Margery Taylor, Mr Alister Minnis and Mr Tyrone Sterry.
