THE sun shone on Helensburgh Rugby Club on Saturday for its annual 7s tournament.
A total of 12 teams took part in the fantastic event, which this year was sponsored by The Royal Bar.
And despite a fantastic effort by the home side, who were hoping to lift the trophy, the final proved to be one hurdle too far.
After the preliminary group matches the top eight teams proceeded to the quarter-finals of the cup.
And then it was on to the semis where the Greens took on Greenock and GHK pitted their wits against a spirited Mull side.
Burgh progressed to the final with a narrow victory over Greenock, in what was a quite superb performance.
And GHK proved too strong for the weary Mull troops.
However, with the stage set for Burgh to end the day on a high, GHK stole the limelight with some excellent rugby that secured the trophy.
In the bowl competition Helensburgh's President 7 took on Lomond School FPs in the final, with the FPs winning convincingly.
Vice president Peter Holmes told Sport Scene: "The weather was very kind to us and we were very happy with the day.
"Some excellent rugby was played and all who came along to watch thoroughly enjoyed themselves."
More pictures of the 7s tournament and also a full round-up of Sunday's Mini Rugby tournament will be in next week's Sport Scene.
In other news, Helensburgh Rugby Football Club is pleased to announce the formation of a brand new touch rugby league at Ardencaple, with Friday June 18 as the proposed starting date.
Touch rugby is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and offers people of all fitness levels the chance to play a fast, exciting non-contact sport during the summer months. In fact, Scotland's open mixed team are the current European champions.
The league will run each Friday night from 7pm until 9pm under the expert eye of SRU development officer, Tyrone Sterry, who will run an introductory training session on the first night for those unfamiliar with touch rugby.
With a maximum of 10 per squad, the league is open to everyone, regardless of experience and there are no age restrictions, though under-16s will need parental consent to take part.
There is a small registration fee of £50, payable on the night, and depending on the number of teams that take part, sponsorship opportunities will be available to local businesses. Closing date for any team entries is May 30.
