Opponents Antonine had finished the previous season strongly and are considered potential favourites to win the league. Favourites or not the Helensburgh had the best of the first half on play, however they couldn’t take the chances when they fell and with the visitors keeper making a string of fine saves kept his team in it.

With a couple of minutes left on the clock to half time it was the visitors that took the lead when their striker scored with a tremendous strike that Cavanna in goal could do nothing about.

The second half was more of the same with the home side pushing forward and again failing to take any of the clear cut chances that came their way.

The home team battled on and almost got back into the game with a stunning strike by Calum Stone which was only bettered by a magnificent one handed save from the keeper that deflected the ball onto the bar. The visitors then scored a third, again from a mistake and then rounded off, what was a disappointing night for the home team, by making it four from a corner.

The following Saturday saw the boys travel to Glasgow to take on Corkerhill. With a depleted squad it was always going to be a struggle against this much fancied team but the side showed their fighting qualities by matching their hosts all the way. However, a slight hesitation between keeper and defence allowed the Corkerhill striker to fire home on the stroke of half time.

They lost another goal just after the re start however never gave up and Steven Conner reduced the deficit with a well taken strike, for the next 20 minutes it was the Burgh team who looked most likely to score but once again lady luck was not on their side and with tiredness taking a toll the home side snatched the the goal that gave them some breathing space.

Manager Sam Gemmell was disappointed with the results of both games but could find no fault in the overall performances.

He said: “It was only some tremendous goalkeeping in the first game that kept us out and we created load more chances than Antonine but they took the ones that came their way and that’s what counts, “In the Corkerhill game we were always on the back foot due to the numbers but we held our own for long periods of the match so we have a lot to build on for the up coming game.”
