Burgh were 11-3 down at home to Kilmarnock before running out 22-18 winners, ending their poor run of form which has seen them lose two weeks in a row.

Kilmarnock had lost every game prior to their visit to Ardencaple so defeat would’ve been a big blow to Cashmore’s side.

However Rogers thinks the half time team talk steadied the ship and led to Burgh turning the match around following the interval.

He said: ”After a few stern words from John and a few tactical tweaks we were able to work through the problems we had in the first-half and the second-half was much better.

“Scoring two quick tries in the second-half really gave us momentum — having scored the first I think we caught them off guard for the second one.” Burgh host Garnock in the cup this weekend before travelling to Newton Stewart in their next league fixture — and having got the victory on Saturday have a chance to leapfrog them in the league standings.

Rogers thinks Helensburgh are well suited to playing teams like Newton Stewart.

He said: “Newton Stewart have always had a tough side — at their place they are a bit stuffy.

“It will be a clash of styles, they have a lot of big guys who try to run through you rather than round you — but we have had success against teams like that in the past. With our expansive style we can get around them and tire them out.” Rogers has had a difficult start to the season having missed games for a number of reasons but he is keen to play consistently and adopt to the new ideas of Cashmore, who took over as coach during the summer.

He said: “I’ve only played a handful of games and missed a chunk of pre-season. I’m trying to adapt to John’s ideas, they are great ideas but sometimes it just takes time to adjust.

“I want to get more tries this year that is my goal, I only got one last year so I am looking to improve.”
