TRIUMPHANT: The Helensburgh Tennis Club ladies second team celebrate their promotion

HELENSBURGH Tennis Club's ladies second team celebrated returning to division one last week with a well deserved night out.

The team remained undefeated throughout the season as they finished champions of the west of Scotland second division.

Team captain Carol Bews praised her regular team of Denise Lavery, Suzanne Marshall, Gay Black, Louise Burnett and Mhairi Stevenson who battled every week to ensure that the team were playing top flight tennis next season.

Carol also called on the talents of Yvonne MacFarlane, Morag Cawley, Lizzy Burt and Sue Scott from the third team to help out when her players were unavailable.

The second team has been in the first division before and Carol knows how tough it is, but she and her team are relishing the challenge.

Carol's team will be joined by the ladies first team in division one next season as they narrowly lost their battle to stay in the premier league.

The ladies third team may end up being champions of their division as they currently sit second with one match to play.

Strathgryffe, who have played all their matches, have 45 points and Helensburgh have 41.

Helensburgh just need to win 5-4 or better against bottom club Anchor to win the division.

Team captain Yvonne MacFarlane said that her team fully deserve to gain promotion after the way they have performed this season.

The fourth team almost made it a hat-trick for the ladies as they narrowly lost out on promotion by only four points.

The team won four matches and lost four and ended up in a respectable third place.

The fifth team won four matches and lost five and ended up in sixth place.
