AFTER a week of rainy, blustery weather, the junior championships at Craighelen Tennis Club, under the stewardship of Eileen Drummond and Sue Black, went ahead on Saturday July 17.

Thankfully the conditions were more settled and all matches were completed by late afternoon.

There was a great turnout of young players and a large contingent of spectators who were treated to a fine display of tennis.

The quality of the play was right through from the minis to the under-18-year-olds, many of whom now play for senior teams.

The barbecue was lit at lunch-time for burgers and sausages and the kitchen did a roaring trade in cakes and teas.

The scores are as follows. In the mini teams, Euan Mair beat Daniel Brown 5-3, 3-5, 10-8.

Ross McKechnie beat Connor Ross 7-0, 7-2 and Mairi Coleman beat Anna Scullion 7-2, 7-1.

In the under-12 boys, Jamie Porter, son of Graeme Porter, a past boys' under-18 champion at Craighelen, beat Lewis McKechnie 6-2, 6-3.

In the under-12 girls section, Alex McFarlane beat Heather McNeill 6-2, 6-1.

In the under-14 boys, Ciaran Losh beat Adam Juster 6-0, 6-2 and then Ciaran went on to beat David Grace 6-0, 6-1, in the boys' under-16 event.

April Robertson beat Eilidh Coleman 6-0, 6-2 in the girls' under-14 final and then Eilidh went on to beat Grace McCallum 6-2, 6-1 in the under-16 girls' final.

In the boys' under-18 final, Ross Birss beat Chris Ungruh 6-0, 6-1, and in the girls' under-18 final Florrie Black beat Gemma Bolton 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles matches, Ciaran Losh and Adam Juster, in the under-14 age group, beat John McFarlane and David Grace 6-0, 6-0.

In the under-18 boys' doubles, Ross Birss and Chris Ungruh beat Ciaran Losh and David Grace 6-1, 7-5.

In the girls' under-14 doubles, April Robertson and Eilidh Coleman beat Alex McFarlane and Fiona Porter 6-0, 6-0.

In the girls' under-18 doubles, April Robertson and Florrie Black beat Sarah Coleman and Gemma Bolton 6-4. 6-3.
