THE area’s budding tennis talent was on display last week at the annual Helensburgh & District junior restricted championships held at Helensburgh Tennis Club.

In the boys’ event top honours went to Craighelen’s Ross Birss who won the under-18 and the under-21 singles titles.

He then teamed up with Jemma Bolton to take the mixed doubles title to make it three titles.

Helensburgh’s Fraser Fulton retained his under-12s singles title and the under-10s was won by Helensburgh’s Gregor Chambers.

In the under-14 singles Andrew Ram won a thrilling match against Jack Keating taking the title in the deciding tie break.

The pair then teamed up to beat Fraser Fulton and Calum Caskie to take the under-14 doubles. David Reid beat Jack Keating to take the under-16s singles but lost the under-18s doubles with his brother Stephen as they were beaten by Craighelen’s Ross Birss and Fraser Baird.

It was a family affair for the mini red event with Finlay Gray beating his younger brother Nicol. Mathilde Sreeves beat Ross McKechnie in the orange event.

In the girls’ event Katherine McPhie won the under-16 and 18 singles events before teaming up with Sally Ram to win the under 14 doubles.

Mathilde Sreeves added the under-10s singles title to her orange title. Sally Ram won the under-12s event but was outplayed by Adele Sreeves in the under-14s.

Jemma Bolton won the under-21s event and teamed up with Sarah Coleman to take the under-18s doubles. The tournament committee would like to thank all the sponsors including, Raeburn Hope Solicitors and AMG Chartered Accountants.

The trophies were presented by Joy Michie, daughter of Will and Margaret Steuart-Corry who were instrumental in setting up short tennis in the Clyde Centre and getting young children into playing tennis for many years.

Special thanks goes to tournament organiser Alison Reid and referee Katie Fulton assisted by Eileen Drummond and Sue Black and all the parents and other helper who attended over the week.
