Record breakers
A SERIES of internal open competitions were held at Helensburgh Amateur Swimming Club recently.
These were hosted over a three-week period since the re-opening of Helensburgh Swimming Pool.
The events took place before the annual prizegiving and the start of the new swimming season to make up for the competitions missed whilst the pool was closed.
The first evening got off to a great start with both the open 200m freestyle and open 100m individual medley being held.
The purpose of these events is to enable all the swimmers to compete against each other regardless of age.
This can be challenging for the younger swimmers but a great opportunity to achieve new personal best (PB) times.
Twenty-six competitors took part in the first event, the 200m open freestyle, with some great swimming taking place.
Duncan Anderson took first place in the male section with a time of 2.24.93 and Amy McNeill took first place in the females with a time of 2.39.50.
This was a great start with some other good times achieved by the club swimmers.
The second event, the open 100m individual medley, took place straight after, again with some great PB’s being achieved.
Again Duncan Anderson took first place in a time of 1.13.76 and Amy McNeill also took first place again for the girls, achieving a time of 1.22.95.
There were a few disqualifications during this event due to stroke infringement.
The next event to take place was the open 400m freestyle with Duncan Redstone winning this race for the boys and Amy McNeill again taking first place for the girls. The final race to take place was the open 800m freestyle with PB’s for 17 of the swimmers and one new time.
With just 18 swimmers taking part this was an excellent result for them all and highlighted all the hard work that had been put in by the swimmers since returning to training at the Helensburgh Pool.
This was Christy Morrison’s night as she took first place, beating Amy McNeill in the girls race and Duncan Anderson took first place again for the boys, ending a great series of open events. Several club records were broken throughout these competitions.
Amy McNeill broke both the 100m individual medley and the 400m freestyle for the girls; Christy Morrison broke the 800m freestyle.
Duncan Anderson broke both the 200m and 800m freestyle and also the 100m individual medley.
Duncan Redstone broke the 400m freestyle and Ben Adlington broke the 200m freestyle in the younger age group.
These results give the swimmers some fantastic times to beat in the season ahead.
