Swimmer secures glory in national tournament
A HELENSBURGH swimming sensation took part in the Scottish national short course Championship last month.
The three day event was held on the January 7, 8 and 9 in Glasgow at Tolcross Park Leisure Centre.
It was the first national event of 2011 and an absolutely memorable experience for talented 13-year-old Duncan Anderson.
Swimmers from over 60 clubs throughout Scotland took part over the weekend from as far afield as Aberdeen, the Highlands and the Borders.
Helensburgh Amateur Swimming Club (HASC) are as proud as could be that Duncan achieved a consideration time for this national event. Duncan swam in the 100 metre individual medley race for boys under-15.
Out of 90 boys swimming in the event, Duncan was one of the youngest swimmers participating - only 12 other boys were aged 13.
The president and coach of HASC unfortunately couldn't accompany Duncan on Friday January 7, but his very proud parents, Helen and Bruce Anderson, took him along and supported him.
The proud parents said: "It was a great opportunity for Duncan to swim at this level and he really enjoyed the day."
Duncan didn't get a personal best on the day, but he did beat Hannah Miley's younger brother, Joseph Miley, also aged 13.
Hannah, incidentally, got nine gold and two silver medals. Duncan's hero, Robbie Renwick, won four gold medals.
Duncan is now set to compete again at Tollcross in the Scottish schools finals.
We are sure the whole of Helensburgh wishes this very promising star of swimming the best of luck in 2011.
