Nicola Skrastin and Constanze Zehentmeier

Hockey

TWO emerging hockey stars were selected to represent West District at the Inter-District Indoor Hockey Tournament on Saturday at Hutchesons' Grammar School.

Nicola Skrastin and German boarding student Constanze Zehentmeier, from Lomond School, were the lucky pair to be chosen.

There were meant to be six districts competing in a round-robin event but North District had to pull out at the last minute because they were unable to travel due to snow and wintry conditions on the day.

West played against South-West first and despite leading 2-1 they lost two goals in quick succession and lost the match 3-2.

This was a devastating start, but West had to pick things up against Midlands.

Conni gave West the lead with a well taken penalty corner and Nicki scored from open play.

West continued to dominate the game and Conni went on to score a hat-trick and the final result was 6-2 to West.

The vital match was against East District, who had won all their matches.

The West team took far too long to settle into the game and East had scored four goals before West could retaliate.

Bethan Mann and Nicki managed to claw two goals back, but the final result was 4-2 to East.

The last match of the day was West versus South.

West needed to finish on a better result and prove their strengths in the indoor game.

This is what happened and they dominated the game moving the ball all over the court.

Five different players managed to get on the scoresheet to give West an impressive 5-0 victory.

This last result gave West the runner-up position to East and the whole West squad received silver medals from West District President, Helen Walker.

Conni finished top goalscorer for the district with six goals and Nicki was second with three.

This was a very successful weekend for these two outstanding young Lomond hockey players, who are certainly making a name for themselves in the West of Scotland.
