With the profile of netball growing in Helensburgh recently and more and more players taking to the court, the tournament was another example of how popular the sport is quickly becoming.

Lomond School was supported by Helensburgh Netball Club in officiating the competition with teams from Cardross, Hermitage, St Patrick’s, John Logie Baird, Rhu, Colgrain and Lomond primary schools all taking part.

The competition featured two pools for the first round game play with all teams in each pool playing one another.

The top two teams from each section then faced each other in a final while second place teams in the pools fought for third and fourth places.  Pool A saw some of the youngest players in the competition with St Patrick’s and Lomond fielding mostly primary six pupils, but the competition was still strong.

Lomond qualified for the final and Rhu for the third and fourth place play-off match.

Pool B was bursting with talent with Colgrain and Cardross both beating the other teams and drawing their match with each other.

Surprisingly, for netball, goal difference had to be considered when deciding onward qualification and Colgrain pipped Cardross to make the final against Lomond.

The final was a good-natured affair that resulted in Colgrain Primary being crowned well-deserved champions for this year.

Sharon Willis, Lomond School spokeswoman, said: “Congratulations to all teams on a great afternoon of sport and to Colgrain Primary on their achievement.

“It was delightful to witness some excellent skill on display as well as observing the young children having a great deal of fun.

“The members of the area’s senior netball club were excited to see the upcoming talent from across all the schools.”
