The former Loch Lomond Hockey club player has been named in the Scotland squad for the Commonwealth Games and she can’t wait to grab the opportunity.

Skrastin started playing hockey at Lomond School as an 11-year-old and after playing for her school and Loch Lomond she moved onto Clydesdale Western where her talents have been recognised with a number of international call ups, however, she says she is still coming to terms with her selection for the Glasgow Games.

The 21-year-old midfielder told Advertiser Sport: “It’s a bit of a dream come true, but the last two years we as a squad have been training extremely hard and it’s nice to see that that has paid off. It’s still slowly sinking in.

“I was so excited when the squad was announced but it hadn’t publicly been announced so I could only really tell my family — and really all I wanted to do was tell everyone.” Skrastin hooked up with her Scotland team mates to play in the Investec Cup in London last week, losing out 2-0 to South Africa but convincingly beating Wales 5-0 and she believes the London event serves as an ideal warm up for the action kicking off in Glasgow.

With the perfect preparation behind the team, Skrastin and the rest of the squad are aiming high at the Glasgow Games and she knows the backing of the vocal home support could prove prucial if they are to achieve that aim: “The London Investec Cup is ideal preparation tournament for the Commonwealth Games.” “Our team target is to finish in the top four, so we are aiming for a semi final position.

“The crowd will help so much, they’re like an extra player on the pitch and can really help to create a buzz on the pitch.” Skrastin and the rest of Scotland’s hockey squad kick off their Games on Thursday, July 24 at Glasgow National Hockey Centre.
