Reid had been chasing his second Super Series title of the year after beating Shingo Kunieda in the semi-finals of the Sydney International in January before going on to win that title, however Kunieda proved too strong this time around.
The victory was Kunieda’s fifth British Open title and speaking after the match Kunieda said: “I’m very happy to win here for the fifth time. I served well today and returned well and I felt like I could control everything, so it was a very good match for me,” Kunieda commanded the opening set and although world number three Reid came from 5-1 down to have a game point that would have made it 5-4 in the second set, the top seed held on to add to his previous titles in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012 with a 6-1 6-3 triumph.
Earlier in the week Reid was in impressive form as he overcame Sweden’s former world number two Stefan Olsson 6-0, 6-1 to reach the quarter finals where he defeated France’s Nicolas Peifer in three sets to reach his third successive British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships semi-final before seeing off Stephane Houdet to reach the final of the tournament.
Reflecting on a successful week in Nottingham Reid said: “It’s a dream to win my home Super Series, but Shingo has been the best player all week and he was the better player today, so congratulations to him, he played a great match.”
